An artistic sanctuary tucked away behind the office buildings and strip malls of Sunset Hills, Laumeier Sculpture Park features over 100 acres of outdoor museum space. From 8am to sunset, daily, visitors can marvel at giant sculptural masterpieces on the open grasslands of the park, or discover more surprises by walking the trails that wind through the forest. The museum offers self-guided iPod tours, as well as docent led tours that cost $2 per person, with the exception of the free docent tours on Sundays. The indoor galleries at Laumeier showcase rotating modern art installations that often feature very provocative multi-media exhibits.
Although climbing on the sculpture is prohibited, Laumeier wants art to be an interactive experience. This is why they offer art camps for kids and teens, and art instruction classes for all ages. Locally active, Laumeier hosts annual concerts featuring homegrown musicians, like Gentleman Auction House, at LOMA, or Laumeier Outdoor Music Amphitheatre. The only thing missing from Laumeier is a caf?, although they do encourage you to bring a picnic and your pooch, for a day of exercise in imagination.
